Exchanging Old European Banknotes That Were Used before the Euro
While most banks no longer deal in these old currencies, we will exchange almost every currency withdrawn after the introduction of the euro. Call today for details on which banknotes and coins of the former European currencies are still accepted for exchange. The condition of the banknotes is not important; even if you have severely damaged banknotes, they can usually still be exchanged. To exchange any of these notes, please request a quote.

Exchange Obsolete British Pound Banknotes for Foreign Currency or UK Legal Tender
The oldest banknotes accepted are Bank of England notes dating from 1694. All British banknotes issued by the following banks can be exchanged without time limit, regardless of age:

• Bank of England
• Bank of Scotland
• Royal Bank of Scotland
• Clydesdale Bank
• Bank of Ireland
• Northern Bank
• First Trust Bank
• Ulster Bank

Exchange Options
If the banknotes are to be exchanged for foreign currency, they will be accepted at face value. If they are to be exchanged for current banknotes, 95% of face value will be paid by bank transfer, check, or Bank of England notes. To exchange these notes, please email us with the amount you wish to exchange.

Exchange Pre-Decimal British Coins
All UK coins can be redeemed regardless of age; however, please note that postage can be expensive (particularly from abroad), so it is likely only worthwhile if you are in the UK or if you have a large amount of coins (£30 in value or more). We accept withdrawn decimal coins (those issued after 1971 but no longer in circulation) for immediate payment; older coins (denominated in shillings, sixpence coins, and so on) will have to be sent back to the Royal Mint. This is done twice a year in May and October. We buy withdrawn coins for 90% of face value.
